There can be any number of issues that arise with conveyor belts, but the most common problems we see include belt tracking, seized rollers, blockages, material carryback, material spillage as well as belt tears and seam rips.
When a conveyor belt breaks down, quite often the problem could have been avoided or delayed through proper care and attention leading up to that point.
Routine checks and maintenance are key
You can delay potential issues with your conveyor belt by carrying out the following checks regularly – they may seem simple but you’ll be amazed how often these things get overlooked.
- Check for product buildups and clean your system regularly. A backlog of product is the quickest way to put your conveyor belt under excessive strain and cause problems later down the track.
- Make sure your frame is square and level and that the end pulleys are even. It’s difficult for your system to run properly if the system is tilted at an angle. Your system can be thrown out of alignment simply from the regular motion of the machine or by transporting different materials at different times.
- Keep the idlers running smoothly and replace any worn parts as soon as possible. Failure to do this can put strain on other parts of the conveyor system and lead to further problems. It should go without saying that you should clean rollers regularly and replace them when they wear out.
Expect the best but prepare for the worst
It’s a good idea to prepare for emergency repairs by stocking spare parts, cold-curing supplies and/or metal fasteners so you can repair rips quickly. If production stops and you can’t repair the belt immediately, have a plan of action for when/if that happens – will it stop completely, or can you move it elsewhere whilst repairs are in progress?
If you’re unsure, contact professionals
If you do have a fault with your belt, make sure you turn off the conveyor before attempting any repairs yourself – crushed fingers and broken bones happen all too often. If you’ve attempted repairs yourself and can’t fix the problem, contact professionals.
