Advantages of Steel Cord Conveyor Belting
There are many advantages to steel cord conveyor belting, which are outlined below:
Long life expectancy – steel cord reinforced belts are virtually maintenance-free and can be supplied with increasingly thicker rubber covers for the same strength rating. Belt splices can last as long as the belt itself when performed correctly, achieving a strength equivalent to that of the belt.
Large centre distances – steel cord belts have very low elongation and as a result, systems with large centre distances can be planned without having to account for limitations of take-up and transfer points.
Low pulley diameters – flex fatigue sets in very slowly with steel cord belts and the carcass thickness is considerably lower than that of a fabric reinforced belt. They can therefore operate with lower pulley diameters than fabric reinforced belts with the same strength rating. Additionally, the safety requirements for steel cord belts are 6.67 compared to 9 – 10 for textile conveyor belts, making the difference in pulley diameters even more obvious.
Low Elongation, high impact resistance – the elongation of steel cord belting is a function of elastic modulus of the steel and the amount of twist in the cord. The very low elongation of steel cords means short gravitational take-ups. Typically, elongation is 0.25% of the total belt length. The geometry of a steel cord belt provides for a greater quantum of rubber per unit volume compared to fabric reinforced belts permitting (approx. 1.5%) a more effective absorption of impact energy. Consequently, Steel Cord Belts allow discontinuous feed of heavy individual pieces without localized elongation.
Excellent Troughability
Even the strongest steel cord belts trough perfectly on deep troughed idler sites. This ensures easy belt tracking and superior volumetric capacity, whereby more material can be conveyed at the same speed or narrower conveyor systems can be employed.
Easily Reconditioned and Rejuvenated
Steel cord belts can be repaired with hot or cold vulcanization and the damaged edges can be restored to original width by hot repair. Worn out covers can be replaced with fresh rubber durable enough to completely rejuvenate the belt, delivering even greater service life.
Applications
Open cut & undergrounds mines, harbours, metallurgy, power stations and chemical plants are all common users of steel cord conveyor belts.
